he took a bluey and he called totale: the fall 1982 (pt.2)

August 21 1982: Saturday afternoon. With a hit single ('Lie Dream Of A Casino Soul') in the NZ Top Twenty, The Fall turned up at the Sounds Unlimited record store on Queen St to meet their Auckland fans.

When Fall manager Kay Carroll and Mark Smith first walked into the shop, her face dropped at the sight of the bootleg 'Lie Dream' T-shirts hanging everywhere. She looked furious, and said something to Mark about it, but he didn't appear to care.

A few years later I opened up the weekly NZ 'Listener' magazine and turned to Chris Knox's review of 'This Nation's Saving Grace' . Chris had based a caricature of Mark on the photo above.

"Everybody's temporary in the Fall"
Helen Collett interviewed Mark and Kay for the weekly New Zealand Sunday Times: here.

"...the rather rhythmic beat would stop and Smith would begin yet another episode jungle philosophy"
Victoria Macdonald reviewed the August 20 show in the Auckland Star: here.

Niccol: You're not being very receptive.
Smith: You keep asking stupid questions.
Fiona Niccol bravely interviewed Mark by phone for the Auckland Star. A classic of the MES interview genre: here.

Superb, thanks very much! Some of the best photos of the Fall I've ever seen...

Wow- like looking at your school photos (y'know the ones where you're drinking Fosters at 10am?) You got any more of those bootleg Lie Dream t'shirts? Slightly larger now I think. I can't wait to point these out to Steve & Marc. 'When we were the new boys' - indeed

Wonderful stuff. I wasn't even born then but probably favourite line-up/era. And black and white just beats colour anyday. Oh, and THANKS Paul.
